Curriculum Newsletter - Year 3 and 4

Summer 2006

Set out below is a broad outline of your child’s curriculum for this term. It is important to note that, in addition to the work described below, time will be spent upon other aspects of the curriculum, especially the development of basic skills in English and Mathematics.

Literacy
During the daily literacy hour the children will cover work on:
• Stories that raise issues.
• Stories from other cultures.
• Comparing stories by the same author.
• Poetry in different forms.
• Persuasive writing, including advertisements and circulars.
• Discussion texts.

Numeracy
During the daily numeracy hour the children will cover work on:
• Place value.
• Addition and subtraction.
• Multiplication and division.
• Handling data.

Science
In Science the children will develop an understanding of:
Mini beasts.
This will include learning about:
• Grouping and studying mini beasts.
• Food chains.
• Habitats.
Materials
This will include learning about:
• Different materials.
• Properties of materials
• Natural and man made materials.
Solids and liquids.
This will include learning about:
• Differences between solids and liquids.
• Materials that can exist as both solid and liquid.
• Ways to separate different solids.

Geography.
The children will be looking at the school environment and considering:
• Noise levels and how they can be improved.
• Waste materials and recycling.
• Litter problems.

ICT
The children will investigate how to:
• Programme a robot to move around the room.
• Change the order of the commands and the effects this will have.
• Use compass directions to control the robot.

Design Technology
The children will be:
• Extending their knowledge of electrical circuits.
• Designing and making an alarm for a specific purpose.
• Evaluating their alarms as appropriate.

Art
The children will:
• Do observational drawings from nature.
• Look in detail at different styles of chairs from different times and cultures.
• Design and make a model of a chair for a particular chosen person or event.

Music
The children will learn how to:
• Set words to music.
• Present a class performance.
• Match sounds and movement

P.E.
The children will participate in the following:
• Athletics - a variety of athletics events.
• Tennis –general skills leading up to playing a version of tennis.
• Swimming –a weekly programme of swimming will be followed at Stantonbury Campus for children in Mrs Balmbra’s and Mrs Rowe’s class.

R.E.
The children will:
• Learn about how and why Hindus celebrate Divali.

P.S.H.E
The children will cover aspects of:
• Personal development – feelings.
• Citizenship – decisions.
• Relationships – stereotypes and secrets.

At home you might like to:
• Use any information books to find out about mini-beasts.
• Go into the garden or park and hunt for mini-beasts. Turn over a stone or move some leaves and see what you can find.
• Look at a variety of chairs and talk about the differences between them, which one you prefer and why.
