Curriculum Newsletter - Year 5 and 6
Set out below is a broad outline of your childs
curriculum for this term. It is important to note that, in
addition to the work described below, time will be spent upon
other aspects of the curriculum, especially the development of
basic skills in English and Mathematics.
Literacy
During the daily literacy hour the children will cover work on:
Discussing the work of a single writer
Describing and evaluating the style of an individual poet
Writing poems linked by a theme or form
Reviewing a range of non-fiction text types and their
characteristics
Use of reference texts
Comprehension exercises with a range of different texts
Sentence construction and punctuation
Spelling conventions and rules.
Numeracy
During the daily numeracy hour the children will cover work on:
Mental calculation skills
Pencil and paper procedures involving the 4 operations
Solving money and real life problems
Handling data
Using the calculator
Investigations
Revision of a whole range of topics for SATs.
Science
Year 6 children will revise units of work in preparation for
SATs tests whilst Year 5 review the topics covered so far and
begin a programme of sex education.
During the second half term children will be developing their
ability to use and apply scientific knowledge through devising
investigations and testing scientific theory.
ICT
Children will use BBC Revise Wise site to prepare for SATs and
end of year tests. They will use the Internet to develop and
apply research skills.
Design Technology
Children will work in small groups to design and make a model of
a Fairground Ride as originally planned for last term.
They will also study a range of structures and experiment with
making their own versions of structures for different purposes.
Children will investigate how to reinforce frameworks and
ultimately construct a miniature structure to hold a weight.
Geography
Children will study a unit of work on mountain environments and
use a range of resources including maps, atlases and CD Rom.
Art
Children will investigate masks from around the world and, using
these as a reference, go on to design and make their own masks.
Music
Listening is the focus of this terms work. Children will listen
to a range of music and use these experiences to create their
own compositions which reflect musical elements such as pitch,
dynamics, tempo and structure.
P.E.
Children will:
Concentrate on improving and measuring their own performance
in a variety of running, throwing and jumping events
Complete simple orienteering exercises in and around the
school grounds
Play a variety of striking and fielding games and cover
appropriate skills to enable them to do so.
R.E.
Children will study a unit on Islam during which they will learn
about the importance of Muslim beliefs and teachings.
P.S.H.E.
The themes for this term are:
Keeping healthy
Coping with pressure
Money matters.
French
The children will be introduced to basic words and phrases.
These will include: numbers, meeting and greeting people and
expressing likes and dislikes.
