Information - Years 3 & 4 Curriculum Newsletter

Set out below is a broad outline of your child’s curriculum for this term (Spring 2006). It is important to note that, in addition to the work described below, time will be spent upon other aspects of the curriculum, especially the development of the basic skills in Literacy and Numeracy.

Literacy

During the daily literacy hour the children will:

  • Read and discuss a variety of texts including poetry from different cultures and times, and non-fiction
  • Use spelling strategies and increase vocabulary
  • Develop grammatical awareness and sentence structure and apply it to independent writing

Numeracy

During numeracy the children will cover work on:

  • Place value, ordering and rounding
  • Reading numbers from scales
  • Developing an understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • Real life problems
  • Understanding and using basic fractions and decimals
  • Collecting and interpreting data

Science

In science the children will develop an understanding of:

  • Moving and growing.

This will include learning about:

  • Functions of Human and animal skeletons.
  • Observable characteristics of bones.
  • Movement related to skeletons and muscles.

In addition to this each class will complete an outstanding unit of Science from the autumn term.

Geography

India

  • Where is it?
  • What are its physical features?
  • Comparing Indian village life with life in the UK.
  • Comparison between an Indian school and Great Linford Combined School.
  • Comparison between an Indian village and an Indian city.

Technology

Look at a variety of pencil cases and:

  • Examine them.
  • Draw and label them.
  • Make templates for their own pencil cases.
  • Design, make and evaluate their own pencil cases.

ICT

The children will:

  • Create a branching database.
  • Search and use a branching database effectively.
  • Use charts and graphs to find out and present information.

Music

The children will aim to:

  • Sing melodies that fit together.
  • Listen to compositions and understand how sound can create mood and effects.
  • Plan and perform group compositions.
  • Learn to play the recorder and read music –year 3 children only.

R.E.

Children will be introduced to Hinduism by exploring ways in which Hindus worship and they will be finding out why worship is important to Hindus.

Children will explore the events leading to the death and resurrection of Jesus and the meaning and significance of these events for Christians.

Art

The children will be:

  • Investigating pattern in textiles from the Indian cultures.
  • Investigating stencilling and print making techniques.
  • Exploring ways of combining and organising shapes, colours and patterns to make a decorative textile piece.

P.E and Games.

  • Gymnastics. Partner work and balancing. Matching and mirroring.
  • Tennis. General skills leading up to a version of tennis.
  • Swimming at Stantonbury Campus. Mr Burdett’s class will be swimming during the spring term and Mrs Balmbra’s and Mrs Rowe’s class in the summer term. More details will follow nearer the time.
  • Orienteering Maps of the school playground will be used to follow directions. Miss Arnold’s class only.

P.S.H.E

  • The children will cover aspects of:
  • Personal development – feelings.
  • Citizenship – decisions.
  • Relationships – stereotypes and secrets.

At home you might like to....

  • Look at any pencil cases and discuss good and not so good points about them.
  • Help your child to collect travel brochures showing the variety of life in India.
  • Check food packaging to see what food comes from India.
  • Go to the library to find out any information about India or Indian stories.
