Information - Years 5 & 6
Curriculum Newsletter
Set out below is a broad outline of your child’s curriculum
for this term. It is important to note that, in addition to the
work described, time will be spent on other aspects of the
curriculum, especially the development of basic skills in
English and Mathematics.
Literacy
During the Literacy Hour, children will:
• Examine features of myths, fables and legends from a range of
cultures
• Investigate texts which explain how things work
• Read a range of narrative poems
• Locate information using a variety of sources
• Make notes and discuss interpretation of ‘in your own words’
• Investigate non-chronological reports and write texts which
inform
Numeracy
During the Numeracy Hour, children will:
• Investigate place value and put numbers into order
• Use brackets to determine the order of operations
• Develop understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages
• Practise calculator skills
• Work with 2D & 3D shapes
• Use degrees to measure turns
• Solve problems involving money and ‘real-life’ situations
• Use measures
Science
Year 5 pupils will:
• study forces including magnetism, gravity and friction
• use force meters to measure the strength of a force
• design a fair test, using their understanding of forces acting
against one another.
• investigate light and how we see things
• study how shadows are formed and how mirrors can change the
direction of light
Year 6 pupils will begin a programme of revision in preparation
for SATs. This will involve units of work on:
• Solids, Liquids and Gases
• Earth & Space – seasons, day and night etc
• The Body – heart, lungs etc
Design Technology
The children will be designing & making a soft toy. This will
involve:
• collecting and examining a range of soft toys
• communicating ideas through drawings
• planning the order of work and choosing appropriate techniques
• constructing toys using strong joining techniques
• evaluating products
I.C.T.
Children will be studying the use and function of spreadsheets.
Using Microsoft Excel, children will format cells, enter data,
create graphs and draw conclusions from the data contained
within spreadsheets. Some students will progress to creating
formulae to do specific tasks.
Geography
Children will begin a study of rivers during the second half of
this term and the theme will continue into the Summer Term.
Children will study the different stages in the journey of the
River Severn, from its origins to the sea.
History
Children will continue to study ‘The Victorians’ until half
term.
Art
Pupils will carry out an exploration of Urban Art. They will
study works by well known artists, such as Andy Warhol, as well
as up and coming artists like James Rizzi. After analysing works
by these artists, children will show their understanding of the
styles and materials they have encountered in pieces of their
own work.
Music
Children will explore musical processes, looking at how
different styles of music create different moods and effects.
P.E. and Games
This term the children will be involved in the following
activities:
• Tag rugby
• Outdoor adventure activities, including team-building and
orienteering
• Counter balance and counter tension in gym work
Pupils will also explore a ‘High School Musical’ theme during
Dance sessions
R.E.
The children will continue to study creation stories from around
the world.
P.S.H.E. and Citizenship
There are two themes for this term:
• Getting on and falling out, which focuses on empathy, managing
feelings and social skills
• Going for Goals which allows children of all abilities,
qualities and strengths to feel valued
To support children with this term’s curriculum, parents could
collect and discuss the suitability of different soft toys to
different age groups. Parents who are feeling more adventurous,
might like to explore Milton Keynes for examples of modern art
(alternatively, they could search magazines, news supplements or
the Internet). |
